Shaman
Ode to Mother Earth
New York City Celtophiles have long been able to enjoy members of the group Shaman on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx and occasionally in the Village, in Sterling Forest, and anywhere folk music happens. The band consists of Brahm and Deirdre Stuart, Bob Lepre, and several othere musicians from the area. While they specialize in all sorts of ethnic folk music, their latest tape, Ode to Mother Earth, is composed of new songs, eight by Brahm and two by Deirdre. The songs generally hae themes of reverence for the earth, environmental concerns, and similar ideological ground. While the lyrics to the songs show awareness of modern problems, they have sort of a new-medieval feel. It makes me think more than anything of Fantasy literature and of the neo-Pagan subculture thatıs getting healthier all the time. While some might feel the lyrics border on corniness, theyıre nevertheless some of the best iıve heard in this genre. The music, too, far outshjines standard groups in the same class, which is no surprise, considering the personnel. Fiddle and mandolin player Brahm was amember of the Clan for several years, has jammed with Jorma Kaukonen and is now in I Guillari di Piazza, so he brings experience in many different musical styles to bear in his compositions., Guitarist Deirdre has been active on a more local level in many fine groups including Holy Regalya. Together with their friends, they continue to make great music. Their tape and their gigs are recommended..
